Composed of ready-made materials, this video installation ruminates over the perception of the ephemeral versus the everlasting, as well as the borderline between the sense of security and insecurity.
In the moving image, pedestrians flow through Wangfujing Street in Beijing. I placed everyday objects with a level of fragility in the middle of the street to test reactions from pedestrians. Most of them avoided those items as if they were invisible, ingeniously navigating through the blocked space.
Though expected to be temporary, the construction scene under unstoppable urbanization has become a permanent existence. As people are gradually adapting to constant adjustments to nature, the notion of security is reshaped repetitively. Materials widely utilized in construction sites such as HDPE can take up to a thousand years to decompose. This work proposes a question about common indifference and detachment and creates a space for observation and reflection.
